The Conference

The much-awaited global Tuna Conference, TUNA 2010, will be held from 13-15 September, 2010 in Bangkok -the “capital of the world tuna industry”. Choice of Bangkok as the venue for this biennial global gathering, yet again, would undoubtedly provide much benefits to the industry and the participants alike, byway of improved opportunities for business, investment and networking.

Much has happened in the tuna sector since Tuna 2008. Notably, the global financial and economic crisis has affected almost all fishery sectors, tuna industry being no exception. This multi-billion dollar industry currently faces unprecedented challenges, the product flow being scrutinized from all fronts, from catching up to the time it reaches the dining tables thousands of miles away. Impending EU “catch certification” scheme focusing on addressing IUU fishing and resource sustainability is yet another challenge.  Thus it is an industry that has to operate in a highly cost effective manner in order to survive in an increasingly competitive and ever changing business environment.

Nevertheless, as in the past, the tuna industry has continued to show much resilience and has responded positively with better efficiency in production, adopting aggressive and creative marketing strategies, product innovation and market diversification, while increasingly embracing sustainable practices.

Thus, TUNA 2010 will certainly be the best forum for the industry to keep abreast of the latest trends and developments in the sector, exchange views and initiate new business deals and renew old contacts with partners from all over the world. TUNA 2010 addressed by renowned speakers will particularly take a close look at the current major issues facing the global tuna industry.

TUNA 2010 is the 11th in the series of biennial INFOFISH Tuna conferences, which was first held in 1986. The conference has always attracted industry leaders and policy makers from all over the world, and is growing bigger each time. The last TUNA 2008 was attended by over 600 delegates from 60 countries. TUNA 2010 is expected to attract even more delegates, nearly 700, from all sectors of the global tuna industry: fishing operators, suppliers, exporters, importers, canners, buyers, agents, consultants, government officials, researchers, retailers, wholesalers, equipment suppliers etc.

The three-day conference will take a close look at the latest developments in the global and regional tuna industries, and would cover a wide range of topics on resources, management, fishing, markets and marketing, products and quality developments, new technology, trade and food safety as well as sustainability and environmental issues.

In response to requests from industry, TUNA 2010 will extensively discuss tuna stock status, management issues and measures taken by RFMOs and stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of tuna resources in major fishing areas namely Indian, Atlantic and Pacific oceans. On day 2 extensive coverage on major and emerging markets will be achieved through the participation of key speakers from industry. Technological developments aimed at improving the competitiveness and efficiency of the industry will be discussed on the last day of the conference.  Furthermore, following each session the programme has provided for detailed discussions.
